Dementia and the Homeless Elders.

''Dementia and the Homeless Elders''

Dementia describes a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and social abilities severely enough to interfere with your daily life. It isn't a specific disease, but several different diseases may cause dementia.

Though dementia generally involves memory loss, memory loss has different causes. Having memory loss alone doesn't mean you have dementia.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of a progressive dementia in older adults, but there are a number of causes of dementia. Depending on the cause, some dementia symptoms may be reversible.

My first time living in a homeless shelter and the friend that I found... Ms. Chin a 65 year old Asian lady who became a resident of the shelter shortly after I had arrived. She was emaciated, afraid and suffering from some form of dementia. Staff members at the shelter show very little concerns for the personal problems of the homeless.  In the case of Ms. Chin, this was a major disadvantage.  Shelters are available for immediate shelter emergencies only.  Any additional problems you have must be dealt with outside of the shelter. In this video she and I are at the car impounding facility looking for her truck that innocently abandoned after dining at a restaurant because she could not remember where it was parked. She wandered the streets of Panama City for weeks until she arrived at the shelter when we met....the beeping noise is the truck being towed across town to U haul because it was not drivable due to the amount of clothing and other items filling the truck from front to back leaving no room for driving...Ms. Chin was living in her car before she wandered off and left it in a Waffle house parking lot.  After having her truck towed to Uhaul I had to unload her truck, box and place all of her things into a storage unit...this task took about 2 hours to accomplish as she stood on the side lines and watched...LOL!  During this experience I heard myself asking myself, ''why am I doing this?''  And I heard a voice say, ''because you are the only one she trust and because God has positioned you for such a time as this''...Ms. Chin was somebody's mother and grandmother who was wandering the streets suffering form dementia and God saw it fit for she and I to meet.  The connection that we made solved much of her problems. God used me to take time with her to develop a relationship that led to her remembering and revealing her daughter's name and number and ultimately being reunited with her family and off the streets.  I don't know what God is up to in my life.  Whatever his plans are for me I'm all for it...no matter how hard, lonely or sad...I KNOW THAT GOD HAS A BLESSING IN STORE SOMEWHERE!
